Out & About

The medieval town of Colyton is conveniently situated for trips to the quaint fishing villages of Beer, Branscombe and Lyme Regis. Beer, steeped in smuggling history, has its famous 200 year old quarry caves and model railway exhibition (www.peco-uk.com), whilst Branscombe, often referred to as one of the prettiest valleys on the South Coast, offers traditional country pubs, and charming walks to the beach where you can stop in the sea-shanty for coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Lyme Regis Cobb was made famous in the film 'The French Lieutentant's Woman' starring Meryl streep and Jeremy Irons.
The seaside towns of Seaton, Sidmouth and Exmouth are all within easy travelling distance, you can even reach Seaton using the old-fashioned Seaton Tramway (www.tram.co.uk), which stops at Colyton, and goes through the village of Colyford. On your way to Sidmouth you will pass the Donkey Sanctuary, (www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk), which offers lovely walks, a restaurant, and of course, lots of four-legged friends!
The old market town of Honiton, home of the famous and much collected Honiton Pottery and Lace, is just 9 miles away and is handy for supermarket shopping. The Cathedral City of Exeter (www.thisisexeter.co.uk) is just 20 miles from Colyton and is one of the oldest cities in England. Exeter also has an historic quayside as well as excellent shopping facilities. Guided tours operate throughout the year.
Further afield are the National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor, well worth a visit if you like the 'great outdoors' and enjoy walking. The maritime port of Plymouth now has its very own Dome and also the National Marine Aquarium (www.national-aquarium.co.uk) and the historic Barbican.

There are all sorts of activities available, indoor and outdoor, suitable for all ages. Try your hand at bowls, tennis, croquet, horseriding, go-karting, golf, and all kinds water-sports, including daytrips for fishing and diving. There are numerous adventure parks with lots of undercover activities, and of course you can shop 'till you drop or ramble 'till your heart's content.
